Using illegal fireworks poses significant risks, including injury, fires, property damage, environmental harm, and strain on emergency services. These activities pose a threat to public safety and carry significant legal consequences.
The Galt municipal code was amended in June 2025 to make penalties for those who use and possess illegal fireworks much more severe.
Here's what you need to know:
Stiffer Fines for Illegal Fireworks
Each individual firework device that is possessed, ignited, exploded, discharged, used or displayed is treated as a separate violation.
First offense: $1,000 fine
Each additional offense: $1,000 fine
Example: If you are caught with three illegal fireworks, the fine would total $3,000.
More Severe Legal Consequences
Possession of illegal fireworks can now be cited as a criminal misdemeanor, not just an infraction.
Property Owner's Responsibility
Penalties now apply to property owners, renters, or event hosts who allow the possession, ignition, explosion, discharge, use or display of any illegal fireworks on their property, or on the street or sidewalk adjacent to it.
