The City of Galt encourages continued water conservation efforts.
The City of Galt encourages all residents to continue practicing water conservation. While the Governor officially ended the Drought State of Emergency in March 2023 following record-setting rain and snowfall across California, and this past winter further replenished the State’s reservoirs and snowpack, the importance of using water wisely remains. Although drought conditions have eased, water is still a precious resource. We urge our community to remain mindful of everyday water use and do their part to help conserve for future generations.
Here are a few tips that can help to conserve water on the interior and the exterior of your home:
Exterior
- Visually inspect your sprinkler system once a month. Check for broken or missing sprinklers. If you water at night or early morning you may not notice sprinkler problems.
- Water landscaping in cycles by reducing the number of minutes on your timer, and use multiple starts spaced 1-2 hours apart. This will allow water to soak in rather than running off.
- When using manual sprinklers, set a timer to remind you when to move the sprinkler or turn the water off. Automatic shut-off nozzles are required for hose watering.
- Where practical, water during early morning or evening hours to maximize water infiltration and minimize evaporation during the hotter hours of the day.
- Know where your emergency shut offs are for your home and sprinklers, in the case of a broken pipe or emergency.
Interior
- Run your washing machine, and dish washer only when they are full and this can save up to a 1,000 gallons a month.
- When you clean your fish tank, use the water you drain on your plants. The water is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, providing you with fertilizer for your plants.
- Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. Repairing a leaky toilet can save about 600 gallons a month.
