The City's free compost program ran from March - June 2025, which made compost available to all City of Galt residents on a weekly basis. Over 1200 tons of compost was delivered in 2025!

This program fulfills Senate Bill 1383, California legislation requiring organic material to be diverted from landfill disposal. The program completes the cycle of organic recycling, from green waste carts to the compost facility and into our gardens.

Thank you for participating in the program and helping to make it a success!

  • Manual loading only. No equipment or mechanical loading allowed

  • The City will restock the compost weekly on Thursdays & Fridays, as available

 Funded by CalRecycle

All compost is laboratory tested and qualified for sale per the standards set by CalRecycle.

Senate Bill 1383 established targets to achieve a 50% reduction in the statewide disposal of organic waste from the 2014 level by 2020, and a 75% reduction by 2025. To help meet these established targets and build markets for recovered organic waste products made from California landfill-diverted organic waste, the City of Galt will begin procuring such products in January 2024.

The compost is made from yard trimmings and food waste collected throughout our region. Compost helps add nutrients to the soil, aids in water retention and pest control, and helps plants thrive!

Approximately 200 tons of community organic waste (paper, cardboard, food scraps, grass clippings, leaves, brush and tree trimmings) are brought to the compost facility each day. Green and food waste materials are high in nitrogen and are mixed with chipped branches to add carbon content. After grinding, the mixed materials are placed into rows (windrows) and further processed by watering and turning (aeration). The internal row temperatures range from 132 to 150 degrees which kills weed seeds and bacteria. After about three to five months, the result is a rich-dark-humus-like product ready for use. The compost is laboratory tested and qualified for sale per the standards set by CalRecycle.

Bringing finished compost back into the community closes the loop on organic recycling!
