Senate Bill (SB)1383 was put into place to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions (like methane) at the landfills. All cities and counties in California are required to recycle or divert organic waste. The City of Galt has now implemented an organic waste recycling program for all residents and businesses as of January 2023, in accordance with the statewide mandate SB 1383. Organics, like food scraps, yard trimmings, food-soiled paper and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills. Landfills are the third largest source of methane in California.
