Residents are now required to divert their food waste from the landfill. Start reducing your methane footprint today by putting all food scraps, food soiled paper towels and napkins, soiled pizza boxes along with your landscape debris in your curbside organics (green) cart. Put clean paper and cardboard in your recycling cart along with other recyclables. (Please note: plastic coated paper like milk cartons, hot cups and soup boxes are not recyclable or compostable and should be disposed of in the curbside trash cart.) 

Free kitchen countertop food scrap containers are available in the Public Works Department lobby located at 495 Industrial Dr.

Businesses are required to comply with SB1383 regulations by diverting recycling and organic waste, setting up indoor containers with proper signs, and train your staff. 

1. Diverting recycling and organic waste requires that the business have three disposal bins through the franchise hauler, Cal-Waste. Businesses must have a trash, recycle, and organic bin. 

2. To ensure proper disposal in the outdoor containers, businesses are required to set up indoor containers. This can be in the customer service area (front of house) or in the kitchens (usually if it is a sit down style restaurant). Bins must be color coordinated as such; black (trash), green (organics), and blue (recycle). Make sure there are proper signs posted. Signs should clearly show which items belong in each bin. 

3. Staff must be trained annually on how to sort the waste properly. Ensure training is documented.

State Law SB1383 requires that a formal complaint process is available for violations of requirements including:

-Missing signage or labeling on waste bins 

-Lack of education and outreach materials on how to properly dispose of waste

-No mixed recycling (blue bins) collection service

-No organics/green waste bin collection service

-Missing blue/green wastes bins near the trash cans
