The Galt Police Department has taken its community-based policing approach to the next level by adding two Community Service Officers (CSO) to support the Galt community. This action represents growing appreciation for the importance of fostered relations between police agencies and communities they serve. By incorporating CSO's into their working structure, the department aims to address a variety of non-emergency issues that may arise in the community and leave the sworn officers to deal with more pressing criminal matters.

The work of Community Service Officers is diverse, such as traffic control, educating the public, and assisting in community events. They are not just a relief to police officers by offloading some of the burdens but also increase safety and trust feelings among the public. The presence of CSO's can assist in making interactions between citizens and police more friendly, citizens being more likely to talk about their problems and creating a working environment towards reducing crime.

Also, the employment of CSO's demonstrates a proactive approach to community policing. This approach is one of discovering the needs of an area and changing the form of services to accommodate needs. In enforcing minor crimes or attending to non-emergency calls, CSO's are important in enhancing public security while fostering fellowship with the people. Lastly, the posting of these officers demonstrates investment in the health of the community that is essential in building long-term trust in law enforcement efforts.
