The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was signed into law by President George W. Bush in September of 2003. PREA aims to reduce and prevent sexual assaults in correctional facilities through the establishment of a “zero-tolerance” policy and the development of national standards in incarceration. These standards were developed by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, which were reviewed by the Department of Justice and passed as the finale rule in August of 2012.

The Galt Police Department is committed to upholding the law, and providing the safest environment possible for inmates housed at its facilities. The Galt Police Department maintains a Zero Tolerance Policy toward sexual abuse and sexual harassment of any kind. Inmates who are victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault are encouraged to immediately report the behavior to any staff member by calling (209) 366-7000 or through confidential mail to our local victim advocate, WEAVE, INC. Friends or family members who become aware of sexual abuse within our facilities may also report on an inmate’s behalf. Per department policy, The Galt Police Department shall ensure that an administrative or criminal investigation (whichever is appropriate) is completed for all allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment.

If you were assaulted as an inmate or detainee at our facility, or someone you know who is currently in custody has been assaulted, you may report the assault by calling the Galt Police Department Dispatch at (209) 366-7000, or the on duty Watch Commander. You may also report by calling WEAVE at (916) 920-2952.
