The Galt Police Department provides law enforcement and policing services to the City of Galt. The department includes an authorized strength of 39 sworn officers and 18 professional staff. The Police Department responds to approximately 15,000 calls for service each year.

Building community trust and collaboration has been the heart of the department’s efforts for years. Treating everyone with an equal level of professionalism is our mission, “Public Trust Through Professional Service.”

The department is divided into four divisions.

The Administration Division, currently led by Chief Brian Kalinowksi, consists of the Chief of Police, Administrative Assistant, and the Professional Standards Officer.

The Administration Division has an open-door policy for all members of City staff and the community at large. This is encouraged throughout the Department, along with the responsibility to quickly address issues as they arise. The Administrative Division is responsible for the management and coordination of all police services provided by the Department. This is accomplished by effective planning for both current and future needs of the Department as well as organizing the Department to ensure it can accomplish its goals and objectives. Staff must continually evaluate the activities of the Department, make adjustments, and provide appropriate training to ensure that the Department continues to provide the highest quality of police services possible to the community with the motto: “Public Trust Through Professional Service.”

The Field Operations Division (Patrol), currently lead by Lieutenant Brian Azevedo, provides uniformed patrol, traffic enforcement programs as well as crime prevention and analysis. These services include a wide variety of functions including responding to life threatening and in progress criminal activity, addressing quality of life issues in neighborhoods, performing peacekeeping activities such as mediating disputes, and acting as a problem solving resource. Operations is also responsible for traffic safety and enforcement. Officers are responsible for both proactive and reactive public safety activities within their areas.

Additionally, the division supports our Reserve Officer Program comprised of citizens who have law enforcement training and volunteer their time to the community.

The Support Services Division, currently lead by Lieutenant John Rocha, is responsible for the investigation and follow-up of crimes and criminal activity. Members of this unit have special training in handling specific crimes such as child abuse, sexual assault, juvenile crime, narcotic enforcement, gangs, property, fraud, identity theft, etc.

The Communications and Records Division, currently also lead by Lieutenant John Rocha, is responsible for operating a 24-7 communications center that handles all routine and emergency 9-1-1 calls for service. Our Records staff provide a variety of services to the public at our front counter as well as processes all police reports, criminal complaints, subpoena service, state and federal reports, and other miscellaneous related items.

The City of Galt has a population of more than 26,000 and is geographically broken into three police beats.
